The Whio duck is unique to New Zealand and an endangered species, found in isolated fast flowing back country rivers. They live in breeding pairs, independant of other Whio. They're a treasured species by Maori and a key indicator of clean, healthy rivers. Whio are an ancient species of waterfowl, with less than 3,000 ducks remaining.
